Saving For Your Retirement
Saving for retirement should be a long term investment goal. At the Natal Joint Municipal Pension Fund we have observed that many employees joining the Provident Fund are choosing to contribute 5 % of their salary.  This is a lowest rate of contribution allowed by the Fund..
The special merger increase of 8,3% for the Pensioners of the NJMPF
At the Annual General Meeting of the Natal Joint Funds in November 2008, the proposal to merge the Superannuation Fund and the Retirement Fund was approved.  The merger will result in all members of the two funds becoming entitled to the same benefits.  In addition, pensioners of the Superannuation Fund will receive a special pension increase of 8,3% at the date of the merger due to the larger surplus in the Memorandum Account of the Superannuation Fund .
Annual General Meeting 2010
Elected representatives of the municipalities are to please note that there will be an annual general meeting held on the 5'th February 2010. The meeting will be held in the Sinodale Centrum, Pietermaritburg. Registration is at 8am and the meeting will start at 9.30. This is the fourth term in my capacity as Chairman of the Natal Joint Municipal Pension Funds and it gives me great pleasure to present the Chairman’s annual report for 31 March 2009.
February 2010 News letter
The 67th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the fund was held on the 5th of February 2010. An extract of the Chairman’s address is herewith attached for your information. It contains among others information regarding the Funds investment performance and an update on the merger.

Provident Fund Newsletter 2009
Over the past few years, members have grown used to good investment earnings on their Fund balances. That is because the investment earnings in the Fund are directly linked to market performance on the assets of the Fund.
Second Communication RE. Merger
It was hoped that the required legislative work would be completed by 30 June 2009, so that the merger could be implemented with effect from 1 July 2009.
Communication to Pensioners
Before the merger can take place the amendments to the regulations of the two funds need to be promulgated in the Provincial Gazette. The necessary legal documents were submitted to the Provincial Legislature, and to the Financial Services Board.
Merger Progress Report
The Committee of Management has actively been putting in place the necessary measures to implement the merger with effect from 1 July 2009. I take pleasure in reporting on progress made to date.
Approval of merger
The merger of the Natal Joint Municipal Pension Fund (Retirement) with the Natal Joint Municipal Pension Fund (Superannuation) was approved by the General Committee at the Annual General Meeting held on 21 November 2008.

This is the third term in my capacity as Chairman of the Natal Joint Municipal Pension Funds and it gives me great pleasure to present the Chairman’s annual report. The 2008 financial year has been a very significant one for the Funds.
Divorce Act
In terms of the amendments to the Act a non-member spouse is now entitled to access his/her pension interest (benefit) despite the fact that the member has not yet exited from the Fund and the pension benefits have not yet accrued to the member.
News Letter on Financial Crisis
One only needs to look at recent newspaper headlines to see the negative impact the current “financial crises” is having on retirement saving e.g. Global meltdown equity markets down 50%, Employees postponing retirement due to fall in markets,
Local Government Retirement Funds
The comments on the draft Bill hereunder were formulated by the Local Government Retirement Funds’ Steering Committee, which was mandated to forward these comments by approximately 80% of the retirement funds operational in local government.
Draft Ammendment Bill
The release of the draft Public Administration Management Bill has attracted a tremendous amount of queries, concerns and comments from all sectors of the public.
Communication Propsed Merger
The Chairman of the Committee of Management in his 2006 address to the Annual General Meeting commented that the Retirement Fund has historically catered for mostly “black” employees, whilst the Superannuation Fund has catered for mostly “white”.
Differences in defined benefit & defined contribution
Some of our members have in the past transferred from either our Superannuation Fund or the Retirement Fund both of which are defined benefit Funds to either the KZN Provident Fund or the KwaZulu-Natal Joint Municipal Provident Fund both of which are defined contribution Funds.
